Pirate Captain Image

You sailed on a seafaring vessel for years. In that time, you faced down mighty storms, monsters of the deep, and those who wanted to sink your craft to the bottomless depths. You gained a notorious reputation for you, your ship and crew. The port cities fear you and the military has never been able to catch you. You have always loved the freedom of the open ocean and the mysteries that it brings.

Were you a former captain of a ship that was sunk and you washed up on shore, somehow alive, you remember the ship and her captain who took everything you had and you'll do anything to take it back?

Are you just starting out and you are trying to make a reputation for yourself?

Skill Proficiencies: Intimidation, Deception and Persuasion
Tool Proficiencies: Navigator's tool, vehicles (water), one instrument, one gaming set.
Languages: Two languages of your choosing.
Equipment: A flask, grappling hook, rapier, a belaying pin (club), 50 feet of silk rope, a lucky charm (you may roll for a random trinket on the Trinkets table in chapter 5), a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp.

Feature: No Honor & Thieve's Cant

You come from a dark and seedy background where everyone is trying to get the upper hand on everyone else. As such you have learned to read people and see the true intentions behind their words and actions. You have advantage on Insight (Wisdom) checks.

Additionally, due to your many years of piracy you have associated with many thieves, some among your own crew, and have learned the thieve's cant, a secret mix of dialect, jargon, and code that allows you to hide messages in seemingly normal conversation. Only another creature that knows thieves’ cant understands such messages. It takes four times longer to convey such a message than it does to speak the same idea plainly.

In addition, you understand a set of secret signs and symbols used to convey short, simple messages, such as whether an area is dangerous or the territory of a thieves’ guild, whether loot is nearby, or whether the people in an area are easy marks or will provide a safe house for thieves on the run.

Suggested Characteristics

You should think about why your character would have turned to piracy, and what their position in the crew means for how they interact out in the world. A captain would act almost as a nobleman in the world expecting respect and reverence versus a slave who would likely choice to be unseen whenever possible.
