Sleuth Image

Your past was filled with mystery, crime and intrigue, as you honed your investigative skills either to bring into the light those who would prey on the innocent, or hide such individuals from the eyes of justice. If there's one thing you've learned, it's that there's no such thing as a small detail.

Skill Proficiencies: Investigation, Perception
Tool Proficiencies: Disguise kit, forgery kit
Equipment: A magnifying glass, your choice between a forgery kit or disguise kit, and a pouch containing 15 gp

Investigative Background

Those with the ability to find and expose sensitive information can find themselves on either side of the law. Your former associates dictate which feature of the Sleuth background you have.

d6 Investigative Background
1 Blackmailer
2 Lawyer
3 Interrogator/Torturer
4 Criminal Informant
5 Deputy
6 Criminal Investigator

Feature: Inquisitor

You worked with your local government to find and expose criminal activity, and bring ne'er-do-wells to justice for their crimes. You have trusted contacts in the local government you worked with, and can gain leads and information on current criminal activity in the area. Additionally, in the event that you or an associate of yours becomes incarcerated by this government, you can use your good will with this government to waive the punishment of the incarcerated individual, depending on the severity of the crime. You may only do this one time, as you've effectively "called in the favor" after using this feature.

Suggested Characteristics

Sleuths rarely sit on the fence, with many dedicating their lives passionately to the pursuit of justice, while others work around the law, or even in direct opposition to it. A Sleuth is just as likely to be a clever criminal, as they are to a stalwart enforcer of the law.

Variant Sleuth: Gang Rat

Rather than use your talents to expose crimes and murder, you used them to hide these unsavory acts. You are on good terms with one criminal organization of your choice, and can glean information from contacts you hold within the group. Should you need a crime committed by yourself or an associate to be hidden from the eyes of the law, you can ask for aid from your associated criminal group. Be wary that a favor of this nature is rarely free, and often has unforeseen consequences.
