Lawyers are well studied and certified professionals who carry out the necessary litigation and arbitration of legal matters for others. While some lawyers become very successful and may even gain name recognition in wealthier circles and among those involved in government, many of them end up working desk jobs, consulting on writs, contracts and other documentation that makes any society function.
Legal systems are complicated things and you've made your livelihood off of navigating and sometimes even manipulating that system. Most importantly, if you're not familiar with these loopholes and shortcuts, you know how to find them quickly. You can spend an hour investigating, either through the use of books, legal materials, or by speaking to locals and officials, and at the end of the hour make an Intelligence (History) check to gain knowledge of esoteric laws or loopholes that would be advantageous to a legal matter of your choosing. In addition, you can spend 8 hours (broken up over no more than a week) to grant yourself a functional understanding of the local laws of an unfamiliar legal system, provided you have access to written materials or locals to speak to.
Suggested Characteristics
Work in the field of law is rarely as exciting as adventuring, but it is much more stable and has the potential to pay nearly as well. Not to mention the safety. So a lawyer would not leave their profession lightly to go off and adventure. A lawyer turned adventurer likely experienced some sort of important event in their life that caused them to leave their stable life and set out into a life of danger and violence.
