Early in your life, you were exposed to an unimaginable horror to which your psyche has never fully recovered. After a long rest, or a near death experience, there is a chance that your mentality could shift to another entity altogether. Upon choosing this background, the player rolls a 1d4+1, that is how many different persona(s) they may have. One of the personas must be a 0-level commoner with all ability scores of 10, with a common skill trait (smith, leather-working, jeweler, farmer, etc.). Other persona(s) must use existing ability score numbers but placed into different spots, the only exception would be if multiples of the same score (without racial adjustments). Then the other persona(s) choose a class that complements best with your new scores.
After a long rest, the character could shift persona if the rolled percentile dice rolls UNDER the character's shift percentage. Shift percentage is determined via adding all ability scores together and subtracting the character level to that number. For example, using standard array; 15, 14,13,12,10 and 8 altogether equals 72 and if the character is level 5 then the total is 67 percent. So, if you rolled 67 or higher you stay the persona that you currently are. 01-66 you shift to a persona of your choosing except commoner. On a roll of 100 the shift is to commoner. When character is knocked unconscious (near death), a no roll shift occurs. Also, upon taking devastating damage (more than 1/2 hp in one round) the roll has a disadvantage on the roll.
Suggested Characteristics
Upon Shifting, the physical characteristics upon the shift is apparent and could be mistaken as a shape changer or even a lycanthrope.
