It was no mere accident that you found yourself in the military's Engineering Corps.  Whether it was the idea of serving your country, the prospect of leaving your dismal home town, or simply to support your impoverished family, the army was an obvious choice when you came of age.  However, your true potential lay not in swinging a sword, but a hammer.  Your keen mind set you apart from the companies of infantrymen and your knack for creating structures and mechanisms to accomplish anything you set your mind to landed you a career as an engineer of war, supporting the front lines with your siege engines and defensive constructs.

Feature: Combat Resolve

As a veteran of war you have seen your fair share of battle, but you've done so with little to no weaponry to defend yourself. Building support engines on the battlefield despite enemy armies baring down you, your resolve is ironclad. Once per short rest, during combat, you may have advantage on a non-combat related skill check.

 
Suggested Characteristics

War takes it's toll on everyone involved, not just those on the front lines.  Ingenuity and critical thinking amidst chaos shapes the battlefield engineers very personality.  They prefer to think before fighting, but won't shy away from it in a pinch.  Engineers tend to put others before themselves, and carry heavy emotional burdens of responsibility for the people and causes they support.
