Founded more than a millennium ago, disbanded and reorganized several times, the Harpers remain a powerful, behind-the-scenes agency, which acts to thwart evil and promote fairness through knowledge, rather than brute force. Harper agents are often proficient in Investigation, enabling them to be adept at snooping and spying. They often seek aid from other Harpers, sympathetic bards and innkeepers, rangers, and the clergy of gods that are aligned with the Harpers’ ideals.
As a prelude to your adventuring career (and in preparation for it), you served as an agent of the Harpers. You might have operated openly or secretly, depending on the faction and its goals, as well as how those goals mesh with your own. Becoming an adventurer doesn’t necessarily require you to relinquish membership in your faction (though you can choose to do so), and it might enhance your status in the faction.
- Skill Proficiencies: History and Investigation
- Languages: Two of your choice
- Equipment: A Harper emblem, a partially filled notebook of recent history around your starting location, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 15 gp
By gaining renown as a member of the Harpers, you can advance within the guild. Promotion through the ranks requires the approval of a superior officer. Advancement is a reward for services rendered to the faction, rather than an automatic consequence of increased renown.
Rank 1: Agent
Prerequisite: Renown 3 or higher in the Harpers
Your specific title depends on your role in the guild:
- If you sort through stacks of information, organizing and spreading it throughout the organization, you are an Inscriber
- If you explore out far and wide, helping villages in need of guidance and outsmarting criminal families, you are a Guardian
- If you take other's testimonies and discern between people's truths and fictions, you are an Investigator
As a Harper Agent, you can put out a call for help, gaining access to secret safe houses, underground tunnels, and libraries that may be under Harper control, allowing you and any guests along with you safety for up to 24 hours at a time.
Harpers start understanding that they haven't earned more than what they need to survive. Between adventures, you earn a salary that supports you at a poor lifestyle.
Rank 2: Officer
Prerequisite: Rank 1 and renown 10 or higher in the Harpers
Your new title depends on your previous role as an official in the Harpers:
- If you were an Inscriber, you are now a Librarian
- If you were a Guardian, you are now a Mediator
- If you were an Investigator, you are now a Detective
You are recognized as an authority in your field. At the start of every mission, you are entrusted with a Helm of Comprehend Languages, and access to a round trip through one of the organization's teleportation circles.
Between adventures, you earn enough money pursuing your duties to support yourself at a modest lifestyle.
Rank 3: Commander
Prerequisite: Rank 2 and renown 25 or higher in the Harpers
Your new title depends on your broader interests as they relate to the interests of the Harpers, not that of the titles you held as an Agent or Officer:
- If your interests lie in information, the collection, organization, and spread of it. You receive a specific title, such as Keeper of Alliances or Keeper of Glyphs.
- If your interests concern the people, whether it be from other factions or simple commonfolk, you become a Diplomat.
- If you want a position running a certain base across Faerun and organizing the Harper Scouts below you, you become a Principal of that branch.
Regardless of your specific title, you can secure the aid of up to 2d4 'Spy's (Basic Rules) and a Gem of Seeing whenever you set out on a faction-approved mission, and you have free access to the system of Harper teleportation circles.
Between adventures, your responsibilities to the guild — including unearthing ancient and lesser known tomes, settling disputes with other factions, or running a well oiled branch — earns you enough money to support yourself at a comfortable lifestyle.
Rank 4: Conservator
Prerequisite: Rank 3 and renown 50 or higher in the Harpers
As a Convservator, you serve as the leader of a portion of the Harpers across an entire region in Faerun.
With this rank, you control all the Harpers in a region of Faerun (Like the Sword Coast, or Calimshan), and all its resources are at your disposal, and you take participation in votes for the good of civilization, outside of the law's restrictions, among the other Conservators. You also earn enough gold to maintain a wealthy lifestyle.
Enemies and Allies
As far as the Harpers are concerned, every other faction neglects to put the people first. The Order of the Gauntlet strike fear in those they attempt to protect, The Emerald Enclave are willing to abandon villages to nature's beast, The Lord's Alliance are too busy lining their own pockets, and The Zhentarim keep themselves too deep in the shadows to ever be trusted.
You participate in missions to thwart the criminals of other factions, from overzealous Order of the Gauntlet vigilantes to insidious Zhentarim assassins. Of course, whenever the members of another faction decide to operate for the good of the people, they can become powerful allies for the Harpers.
You've been trained to studiously search through books, papers, and scrolls. You gain advantage on all Intelligence checks involving reading. Additionally, you can get your hands on some useful knowledge if you're patient enough. When contacting a fellow Harper, you may make an Investigation check, and gain a book of useful information within 21 days, the number of days reduced by the amount you rolled, to a minimum of 1 day.

Your bond might be associated with other members of your faction, or a location or an object that is important to your faction. The ideal you strive for is probably in keeping with the tenets and principles of your faction, but might be more personal in nature.
