The One With The Dragon Image

After coming across an orphaned hatchling, either accidentally or by your own design, you've gained a lifelong companion. With offerings you make yourself, you keep in the dragon's favor. With enough time and coercion the dragon has taught you to understand The Weave as the dragons do. While traveling, your actions often create a reputation of mystery and admiration among those helped and a reputation of fear and awe from those engaged against you in battle.

Skill Proficiencies: ArcanaAnimal Handling
Tool Proficiencies: One type of Artisan's Tools used to create offerings for your dragon
Languages: Draconic
Equipment: Traveler's clothes, a book with scribblings done by your dragon, a gem from your dragon as a symbol of your partnership, a set of artisan's tools used to create offerings for your dragon (cook's, jeweler's, painter's, potter's, or woodcarver's), and a pouch containing 10 gp.

Draconic Influences

Due to the bond between you and your dragon certain changes may develop in either of you.

d6 Draconic Influences
1 Thin scales the color of your dragon grow in patches on your body whenever your dragon is in it's pocket dimension.
2 Your dragon likes walking on two legs, but does so unsteadily without constant practice.
3 You and your dragon's personalities occasionally swap between the two of you.
4 You can belch a harmless sensory effect related to your dragon's breath.
5 Your eyes appear draconic and glow when you are agitated or excited.
6 Your dragon's wings can fold seemlesly into its back.

Feature: A Bond Ever-Growing

You gain the company of a dragon hatchling of your choice. The dragon grows as you level, gaining the ability to change form as described below. While within 1 mile of each other, you and your dragon can communicate telepathically. Either you or the dragon can use an action to cause it to disappear into a pocket dimension. While pocketed, you can use an action to cause it to reappear in any unoccupied space within 30 feet of you or your dragon can use its action to cause itself to reappear in an unoccupied space within 30 feet of where it disappeared. In battle the dragon rolls it's own initiative and acts on it's own unless instructed otherwise. Like any creature, it can spend Hit Dice during a short rest to regain hit points. If the dragon drops to 0 hit points it makes death saving throws as normal.

To convince the dragon to perform an action against it's will (at the DM's discretion) you must perform an Animal Handling check with a DC equal to (8 + the form's level)

  • Level 1: The dragon has the statistics of a Pseudodragon Familiar (Variant) summoned with the Find Familiar spell (DC9)
  • Level 7: The dragon can take the form of a Dragon Wyrmling (DC15)
  • Level 14: The dragon can take the form of a Young Dragon (DC22)

Casting the Find Familiar spell allows you to resurrect your dragon but it is summoned in its Pseudodragon Familiar form. Casting Find Familiar while the dragon is alive allows the dragon to change between the available forms. Alternatively, with 8 hours of work and the expenditure of 25 gp worth of gems, artwork, or other offerings, you can call forth your dragons’s spirit after death and give it new form, even if you do not possess any part of its body. You can also perform the ritual to help channel the dragon's magic and reform it's body at the cost of 25 gp worth of offerings per form level.

Suggested Characteristics

Dragons and their companions can have varying relationships ranging from a deep friendship to a mutually beneficial one or even one closer to a slave and master. A dragon may be permanently bound to an adventurer or may one day leave due to disrespect for its companion, constant danger, ill treatment, or even boredom.
