Fisherman Image

You have been a fisherman your whole life. It has been a simple life with little to offer as far as excitement or adventure. You live a life of feast or famine as your income has always changed with your luck in the catch. But you generally want for nothing. Your fellow villagers/crew mates are very close knit. You look out for each other. Lately you have grown bored of the daily grind, it might be time to leave and strike out on your own.

Discuss the nature of the village/ship you previously lived in with your Dungeon Master. Was it a small fishing village, a harbor outside a big city, a deep sea fishing vessel? How secluded is it? Why would your character leave?

What kind of fisherman were you? — caster, trapper, diver, deep water, etc.? Did you leave on good terms with your fellows, or on the run?

Skill Proficiencies: Athletics, Survival
Tool Proficiencies: Fishing equipment, vehicles (water)
Equipment: Fishing Tackle, Rope, Hempen (50 feet);50 feet of hempen rope, a lucky charm such as a rabbit foot or a knife from a family member (or you may roll for a random trinket on the trinket table), Clothes, Common;set of common clothes, a pouch containing 10 gp, and two pieces of fishing equipment to match your background.

Fishing Technique

Every fisherman knows their way around a pole, line, and lure, but exceptional fishermen have a variety of methods they use to convert the sea's bounty into goods or gold. Choose two fishing techniques or roll on the table below:

d8 Fishing Technique
1 Crabbing/Lobster Trapping
2 Spear Fishing
3 Deep Sea Fishing
4 Shrimping
5 Whaling
6 Ice Fishing
7 Netting
8 Oyster/Clam Diving

Feature: Safe Harbor

Other fishermen are likely to do you favors. If you need a safe place to hide, a hot meal, or a warm hearth, your fellow fishermen will lend a helping hand. If you worked as/have connections to a deep sea fisherman, you can secure free passage on a sailing ship for yourself and your adventuring companions. You might sail on the ship you served on, or another ship you have good relations with (perhaps one captained by a former crewmate). Because you’re calling in a favor, you can’t be certain of a schedule or route that will meet your every need. Your Dungeon Master will determine how long it takes to get where you need to go. In return for your free passage, you and your companions are expected to assist the crew during the voyage.

Suggested Characteristics

Fishermen can be a simple lot, but a lifetime of work in the sun make them generally reliable as well. Life as a fisherman shapes their outlook and forms their most important attachments. They tend to be humble, genuine, and generous people.

Variant Fisherman: Feed Him For A Day

While others would see a body of water as simply a means to sate their thirst and refill their waterskins, you see an endless supply of sustinence for you and your party. Provided the water supports life, you can feed yourself and five other people for as long as you're in the vicinity of the water source, and everyone can carry one ration apiece when you leave.

Alternatively, if you're in range of civilization, and you and your party aren't eating what you catch, you can afford a comfortable lifestyle off your bounty.
