Your childhood was difficult. Your family, or lack there of, was squalid and barely had the means to support it's self. Perhaps you were homeless and had to rely on theft or burglary to keep yourself fed. 

You were smart however, always one step ahead of those who wanted to catch you. Perhaps it was this intelligence that attracted a certain individual to you. That brought you to your new home. Against the will of their peers they raised you and attempted to give you a proper education.

Those in the cloister may still look down on you, but thanks to your mentor you now have a new life and a fresh start.
