Astral Caretaker Image

You have spent your life in the service of a temple to a specific god or pantheon of gods. However, your duty is that of containment. You act as a bulwark between the realm of the holy and the mortal world, performing sacred rites to control or restrain your charge, and you stand sentinel against those who would interfere with these aims. You are not necessarily a cleric—all manner of skills may be employed to protect the realms of mortals.

Choose a god, a pantheon of gods, or some other quasi-divine being as your Ward, and work with your DM to detail the nature of your religious service. The Gods of the Multiverse section contains a sample pantheon, from the Forgotten Realms setting. Were you a lesser functionary in a temple, raised from childhood to assist the priests in the sacred rites? Or were you an acclaimed warrior, tasked to stand guard should the horrors of the abyss escape? Perhaps you were an assassin deployed to eliminate those who seek to pierce the veil you protect, or even a vigilante who hunts the religious you believe tread too close to the divine.

Skill Proficiencies: Choose one of Insight or Perception, and one of Religion or Arcana.
Tool Proficiencies: Choose one of any Artisan's Tools and one musical instrument.
Languages: Abyssal,Celestial
Equipment: A holy symbol (a gift to you when you swore your Caretaker's Oath), a Ward Talisman against fiendish and celestial influence, 5 sticks of incense, vestments, a set of common clothes, choose one of set of stealth or religious garb, and a pouch containing 15 gp.

Feature: Planar Ward

As an Astral Caretaker, you have bonded yourself to a Ward Talisman, an object of personal value imbued with the ability to bridge the planes. At character creation, choose a simple object that can be affixed to a glove, necklace, or circlet. This item becomes a magical item that is permanently attuned, consuming one attunement slot, and cannot be removed without a sufficiently powerful Dispel Magic. The manner in which the Talisman is worn influences its abilities.

  • Glove: Any spells that require verbal components may be cast using somatic components instead, provided the somatic gesture is performed with the gloved hand.
  • Necklace: Any spells that require somatic components may be cast using verbal components instead.
  • Circlet: You may sense the presence of celestial or fiendish creatures within a 120 foot radius.

Once per long rest, you may activate your Ward Talisman (you may choose whether your talisman requires either a verbal incantation or somatic gesture at character creation) to adjust the balance of planar influences around you, gaining advantage on ability checks against celestial or fiendish creatures while taking disadvantage on ability checks against the other. This effect lasts for one hour.

Additionally, your Ward Talisman may be presented to members of religious organizations as proof of your standing among the Astral Caretakers. Should the individual be friendly towards the Caretakers, you and your adventuring companions can expect to receive free healing and care at a temple, shrine, or other established presence of your faith, though you must provide any material components needed for spells.

If you encounter individuals or organizations that are in service of, or sympathetic to, your chosen Ward, they may become hostile towards you.

Suggested Characteristics

Astral Caretakers are shaped by their experience in temples or other religious communities. Their study of the history and tenets of their faith and their relationships to temples, shrines, or hierarchies affect their mannerisms and ideals. Their flaws might be some hidden hypocrisy or heretical idea, or an ideal or bond taken to an extreme. They may become skeptical or distrusting of those connected to the supernatural.
