Traveling Chef Image

You spent many a day toiling away in hot kitchens and tasting dishes to master your craft. Anyone who has tasted your dishes can attest to their flavor. One day you decided that being cramped in the back of taverns, or being stuck in stuffy noble kitchens wasn't the life for you, so you've taken your craft on the road. Specializing in cooking over open flame, purifying water from the source, and scavenging for the freshest ingredients, you take your exquisite meals to the famished and poor on the road. There's something soothing about cooking in the brisk winds of morning, or making fresh drinks during the summer heat.

You have been trained to brew your own alcohols. Bitter beers , hoppy ales, smooth porters, and other drinks are all part of your brewing repertoire. You've tended a bar enough that you have come accustomed to hearing other's problems or delighting in their victories. You're a natural at talking to others and helping to guide their decisions, especially after another drink.

Gourmet Kitchen Position

The whiny young son of Dakmer complains about the small fish bone in his meal. The executive chef is brought out before the dinner guests and executed on the spot. Congratulations! You are now the executive chef! Perhaps it would be best to hit the road before someone else gets promoted.

Many cooks would be a jack-of-all trades in the kitchen, scurrying around the backroom of local taverns. Although occasionally, a well trained gourmet decides to take up the travelling life as well. Here is a table to roll on for inspiration, or to randomly determine your position. Maybe your chef is a Poissonier who specializes in a strange rice-rolled fish from another land, or perhaps she knows the best hangover cure after working the morning shift of the tavern the last 10 years.

There are many chefs, styles and possibilities. Feel free to use these or use them as inspiration.

Feature: Taste of Town

You also know where to find some good tavern rumors. Having spent many breaks lingering around kitchen doors, and dealing with problem customers, you can usually find a rumor or two from talking to other local chefs and other kitchen employees. You typically know where these sort of entrances are to different buildings, and the time at which kitchen staff like to take breaks.

Your meals can assist in fatigue when traveling from town to town. If you have enough ingredients to cook a meal at the end of a difficult traveling day, those who eat your meal can add 1d4 to a savings throw for exhaustion. This exhaustion must be for traveling through difficult weather or terrain.

Suggested Characteristics

Travelling chefs not only have a hearty appreciation for meals, they also have a hearty appreciation for the land and it's people. Whether they're fond of the biting cold, or the soothing ocean breeze, something ties them to the land they harvest for ingredients or it's inhabitants.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I thoroughly enjoy the art of cooking. I can usually be found singing a song or humming a tune while at my craft.
2 I've been kept in hot, stuffy kitchens far too long. I'd rather sleep and eat among the stars and sun. Won't see me indoors if I can avoid it.
3 I have a deep appreciation for the cycle of life. Sometimes I get lost in thought when pondering our place in the great web of creatures. I take my part and diet very seriously.
4 Lore and stories are the spice of life. I always have some tale or anecdote about my travels or pertaining to a dish, tavern or ale.
5 Warm food and good ale are fuel for the fire of our souls. I believe there's a dish or drink to suit most moods, or cheer up the downtrodden.
6 I look down on those who can't appreciate the finer culinary subtleties.
7 I view cooking as an art form and can talk for hours about the many small details of the craft.
8 Working in taverns has left me with a thick skin. Nothing anyone says really gets to me. I tend to laugh most things off or send them back with twice the sting.
d6 Ideal
1 Nature. The land is our pantry. We must give back to the land what we take. I only take what I need, and plant what I can. (Neutral)
2 Power. One hears much from lords and ladies while they feast. Much that could be used to my advantage... (Evil)
3 Equality. Nobles shouldn't be the only ones to taste excellent food. Let us set a feast for the common folk whenever we can! (Good)
4 People. I'm committed to the people I share my life and table with. Good food means nothing if there's no one to share it with. (Any)
5 Teaching. Many know the farmer's crops, but know little of what else the land offers. I will teach the people of the land how to survive, and survive well! (Good)
6 Glory. I will carve out a name for my self like I carve this roast beast! All from border to border will know of my name and my signature dish. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 This land has nourished me, in turn, I would give my life to protect her.
2 I sponsor a local kitchen so that none will go hungry in my town.
3 The head chef disappeared and left me an indecipherable cook book. I have a feeling this recipes are for more than just a good meal.
4 I've heard tales of a dish so wonderful, few have the ability to craft it. I will find and make this dish.
5 I saw the future in the tea leaves at the bottom of the pot. I must do something to prevent this prophecy from passing.
6 The most wonderful person came into my bar. I lost them in the crowd; I hope one day to see them again.
d6 Flaw
1 I only eat the best, and of course my dishes are the best. I will not suffer other's unpalatable "meals".
2 I swear I'm a great cook! I just always seem to be misplacing the spice I need...
3 I tend to prefer strange dishes and meats, that many consider unwholesome or perhaps even unethical. Others should really broaden their horizons.
4 My dishes are always perfectly balanced. Any who sully my meal by adding spice or removing flavors will be hearing from me.
5 I tend to use lots of dishes when I'm cooking. Of course I'm not going to clean them, I cooked the meal.
6 A drink for you. A drink for me. A drink for yew. A dink for me. A drrink four you. Two floor me...
