You have been blessed--or cursed, as the case may be--with precisely intermediary features: you are androgynous. In your most base state of existence, you exhibit no prominent trait that would have onlookers believe that you are any sort of distinguishable sex/gender of your race. Some of those who are afflicted so, choose to tread the thin line betwix genders, while others attempt to make the best of their situation, and yet others allow the winds of change to sway their decisions on an irregular basis.
You may work with the DM to flesh out the details of your character's characteristics and tendencies, or roll on the Gender Expression Table.
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose 2: Deception, Performance, Persuasion, Stealth
- Tool Proficiencies: Choose 1: Disguise Kit, Forgery Kit, Thieves' Tools
- Languages: One spoken language of your choice (this chosen language is as natural to speak as your main language, and you have an impeccably natural accent)
- Equipment: Disguise kit, base clothing with 2 sets of gendered garments (additional clothes to add to base clothing that accentuates either ends of the gender spectrum, i.e. skirt/dress, hat and cane, etc,) a pouch containing 13 gp.
d8 | Gender Expression Table |
---|---|
1 | You prefer to keep the sex you were assigned at birth a well-kept secret, and allow strangers to assume what they will. You choose who you allow in on the secret. |
2 | You prefer to keep the sex you were assigned at birth a well-kept secret, and ask others to refer to you by whatever pronouns you prefer. |
3 | You do not care whether or not others know the sex you were assigned at birth, yet ask others to refer to you by whatever pronouns you prefer. |
4 | You prefer to align your appearance with the sex you were assigned at birth when with loved ones, but assume the gender expression that generally accompanies those of an other/opposite sex when out in public. |
5 | You prefer to align your appearance with a/the sex you were not assigned at birth when with loved ones, but assume the gender expression that generally accompanies those of the sex you were assigned at birth when out in public. |
6 | You prefer to align your appearance with the sex you were assigned at birth when with loved ones, but assume the gender expression that generally accompanies those of any specific gender depending on the circumstances with which you are presented. |
7 | You prefer not to align your appearance with any gender when with loved ones, but assume the gender expression that generally accompanies those of any specific gender depending on the circumstances with which you are presented. |
8 | You gender identity is fluid, and changes on an indeterminate personal basis. You ask others to refer to you by whatever pronouns you prefer. |
Depending upon how often you change your outward appearance, beings around you will typically connect their memory of you to one specific gender expression. When you assume a change of wardrobe, those around you will almost definitely assume you are a different being. Upon changing your outward appearance, you are unidentifiable as the persona certain individuals know you to be; your quick changes are convincing. Your change of outward appearance will only be known to be just that by those who know the connection between you and your different personas and/or those who have witnessed you swapping personas. This feature allows for persona change as often as one can don the proper attire, as well as a convenient way to hide in plain sight. Keen attention to persona changes will be necessary to maintain persona secrecy for those who choose to/prefer to change how they express themself/their personas frequently. (Limit: 3 separate personas; 1 in natural state, 2 others of different variations on one's natural state.)
Suggested Characteristics
Those who have embraced the versatility of their features come from all walks of life, and have experienced all sorts of failure and success. The Suggested Characteristics Table is not a conclusive list of possible traits. All beings are individuals. Work with your DM if your particular character demands alterations for this background.
