Mercenary companies don't run on swords and shields alone. Someone has to keep things running and repaired, and, in your company, that someone was you. Everyone in a mercenary company fights, and you've seen you share of the horrors of war, but you picked up a different skill set than the average sellsword. Maybe you were the mechanic or the blacksmith, or maybe you were just the one who knew how to find those difficult-to-acquire resources. Whatever your specific niche, you know how to get things done and keep things running.
Your experience makes you familiar with the ins and outs of mercenary life, and you likely have harrowing stories of events on the battlefield, but now you’re looking for something else, perhaps greater reward for the risks you take, or the freedom to choose your own activities. For whatever reason, you’re leaving behind the life of a soldier for hire, but your skills are undeniably suited for battle, so now you fight on in a different way.

You know the mercenary life as only someone who has experienced it can. You are able to identify mercenary companies by their emblems, and you know a little about any such company, including the names and reputations of its commanders and leaders, and who has hired them recently. You know where they get their resources and materiels, and you know howto find your way into those supply lines. You can find taverns, festhalls, and other such places where deals are made in any area, so long as you speak the local language. At DM's discretion, you can find needed resources and/or enough mercenary work in your capacity to maintain a comfortable lifestyle (discuss with your DM for specifics).
