You aren't a city guard or a local lawman, you're a private detective. A hardened and grizzled veteran within the field of catching criminals with an almost supernatural knack for finding clues, solving mysteries and dealing with whatever else the clients who hire you require. You might be as famous as Sherlock Holmes himself or someone who lays low, preferring the dark and shadowy streets to the fame and spotlights. Whatever the case, you get results, through any means necessary.

- Tool Proficiencies: Forgery kit or Disguise kit or Thieves' tools
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: A set of clothes appropriate to your duties and a pouch containing 20 gp
You are in frequent contact with people from both sides of the law and hold at least a modicum of respect within both of these groups of people.
-Guards and lawmen that know of your abilities won't prevent you from investigating crime scenes and might even lend a hand with certain things or give you some information that people outside of their circles wouldn't be privy to.
-Criminals and crooks feel more at ease talking to you than a normal officer of the law and might spill the details on some of the more disliked members of their groups to you. They may also offer their services with certain illegal activities like forgery or smuggling should you need it.

Posted Jul 14, 20204 skills, a tool, and a language is more proficiencies than what’s suggested in the PHB for custom backgrounds (I think). Isn’t the suggestion 2 skills and 2 shared between languages and tools? So 4 total proficiencies, not 6.
I like it a lot though, but I’d swap the skills to “pick 2 of these 4.”
