Haunted Visions Image

For as long as you can remember you have been able to call upon visions of a person, creature, or object sometimes even without you willing them to.  Either passed down through your family line, gained from a god or other powerful entity, or cursed with them these visions are often accompanied by nightmarish images that slowly sap the sanity of the user.

Skill Proficiencies: Two of your choice from Arcana, History, Insight, Investigation, and Perception.
Equipment: In order to draw forth the visions of her own accord the seer will carry a focus of some sort. Often this will take many forms though most commonly may be a crystal ball, a deck of cards, or a set of runes.

When selecting this background you can select one of the following to act as your focus for the purposes of drawing forth your visions:

  • A Crystal Ball
  • A deck of tarot cards
  • A set of divination runes

The chosen item can be used as a arcane focus for any class that requires one. If the item is lost or otherwise destroyed you can replace it with a new focus, but will require 1 hour to be attuned to yourself.

Feature: Pained visions

You draw upon the powers you hold to try and garner a vision associated to a creature or object that you are familiar with. Roll a skill check equal to d20 + Wisdom Bonus+ Proficiency with your chosen focus, the DC of the check should be set by your DM. Work with your DM using the chart below to determine the type of vision you gain.

  • Critical Failure - Your visions give you a truth, but instead of it being about the subject matter you wish you instead gain a vision of a truth no mortal should ever know (some piece of knowledge about a great old one, a vision of hell, etc). Immediately roll a D6. On a 1-3 you immediately gain a long-term madness, on a 4 - 6 you gain an indefinite madness as described in the Dungeon Master Guide. Your DM determines what type of madness you gain.
  • Major Failure (missed target DC by 10 or more) - Your visions are only flashes of images, if any come to you at all, that may or may not have anything to do with your intended subject matter. At the end of your vision you immediately roll a D6. On a 1 you suffer no further effect, on a 2 - 3 you immediately gain a short term madness, on a 4 - 5 you immediately gain a long-term madness, on 6 you immediately gain a indefinite madness. Your DM determines what type of madness you gain.
  • Minor Failure (missed target by less than 10) - Your vision shows you a partial truth of your intended subject matter though you cannot tell where the truth begins and the other images end. Once the vision ends immediately roll a D6. On a 1-2 you suffer no further ill effect, on a 3-4 you immediately gain a short term madness, on a 5-6 you immediately gain a long-term madness. Your DM determines what type of madness you gain.
  • Minor Success (met target DC or surpassed it by less than 10) - Your visions give you images of the subject matter you are trying to divine though the details are somewhat vague. After the visions end immediately roll a D6. On a 1-3 you suffer no further ill effect, on 4-5 you immediately gain a short term madness, on a 6 you immediately gain a long-term madness. Your DM determines what type of madness you gain.
  • Major Success (surpassed target DC by 10 or more) - Your visions give you clear images of your intended subject matter with vivid details. Once the visions end immediately roll a D6. On a 1-4 you suffer no further ill effect, on 5 or 6 you immediately gain a short term madness. Your DM determines what type of madness you gain.
  • Critical Success - Your visions give you perfect clarity of your intended subject matter and can make out clear details. You suffer no ill effects from visions of this nature.

Unbidden dreams - The true danger of your ability are the visions that come unbidden, typically in your dreams. Your DM can also choose to have a vision come to you in your dreams with a subject matter of their choice.

DM Note: Remember that this ability is meant to be high risk, high reward for the player using this background when determining what visions you give the player. With this being said you determine in which form the visions come. For example it can come as whispers with scant names of places or items, a dream like fugue state that give visual representations meant to approximate the subject matter, etc. Also when giving the player a vision in their dreams you can use this as an opportunity to give the player a premonition of impending danger, a potential adventure hook, etc.
