Servant Image

You have spent your life in service to a wealthy noble or family of nobles. With one foot in the world of aristocracy, and the other in the underbelly of commoners, you have a deep understanding of multiple societal backgrounds and how they interact with one another. Due to daily interaction with other servants, merchants, and mercenaries, you have acquired a wide variety of skills and trades-- or, at least, you have some familiarity with them.

Think about the noble you served. Were they simply a wealthy merchant or travelling entertainer? Could they have been a prominent Lord of a faraway land? Work with your DM to detail the nature of your domain. What about your duties? Perhaps you were a lesser maid among a bevy of staff, assigned to a single task in the house. Were you in charge of a large estate, making sure everything was well-kept for your master? Or were you perhaps the sole retainer of a young heir, pledged a life of servitude due to a centuries-old agreement between the two families?

Pledged Domain

Think about the house you served. No matter what your duties were or whom you did them for, you have a good knowledge of your employer and were provided with access to opportunities that you otherwise would not have had. Was your master a benevolent and friendly magician? Or were they a tyrant of a secluded kingdom? Consider your relationship to them and what you did during your service to either help or hurt them.

  • Retainer: A right-hand man to their liege, with more experience in combat than household chores.
  • Estate Agent: Tends to the upper-level household duties to assure the family is comfortable. Includes communicating with architects and suppliers, and managing tasks when the family is away that would otherwise be handled by them.
  • Lady's Maid/Valet: The companion to the master of the house who tends to all their personal needs. Often a trusted friend and confidant to their liege, they accompany their master wherever their work takes them.
  • Nursemaid: A long-standing employee in charge of raising the children of the noble house. Often highly aware of an entire family's personal and private matters due to their close relationship with the family unit as a whole.
  • Cook: A highly prestigious position in the servant hierarchy, they are responsible for the reputation of their employers when it comes to entertaining guests. In charge of a large kitchen and several staff.
  • Scullery Maid: A low entry position for a servant, they may be a young commoner looking for a better station in life. A highly physical position, they are often told what to do by other higher-ranking servants and may be taken under their wing as an apprentice for a certain position in the household they may later assume.
  • Pageboy: A highly motivated youth usually in charge of building security. Though not as physically taxing as a scullery maid's work, the mundanity of standing at a post for hours on end grows boring, and they are highly aware of the goings-on throughout the halls to keep their minds sharp.
  • Governess: Different from the rest in that the Governess typically does not reside in the estate of their master, they are a contract worker responsible for the education of the nobility's children. There is less of a personal connection to the family than that of a nursemaid, but, in exchange, they are highly respected by their employers and are often given opportunities to further their education.

Feature: Gifted Communicator

As a servant, you are familiar with the ways of both common folk and nobility alike, and this grants you the ability to communicate with people from all walks of life. You carry yourself with an air of elegance that makes your station in society hard to place. You are charming and genial, and you have an easy time winning over merchants, shopkeepers, and artists. In the domain your master ruled over or often visited, you and your party will always have a place to stay in either the house of your lord, or an unoccupied cottage they own.

You may also call upon your lord for assistance through either an in-person audience or letter, given that you are in good standing with them. You may request services from another servant from the noble's staff, or assistance in the form of rations, tinder, or some other form of adventuring gear given that it costs 10sp or less. Your lord has the right to refuse to help you if you request too much from them, so be careful!

Suggested Characteristics

Servants, though at first thought of as lowly, are wise and perceptive figures. Their dedication to their master and the house they serve has provided them with a wealth of historical knowledge, and their connection to the commoners they work with has given them a sharp mind that cannot easily be taken advantage of. Their flaws may be extreme lawfulness or loyalty to a dangerous ideal, or a tendency to keep to themselves and distrust others in order to protect themselves from harm.

Variant Servant: Retainer

Though less accustomed to the way of a noble's day-to-day life, a retainer is just as much of a servant as any other maid or butler. If you choose this variant, you may replace your artisan's tool proficiency with a proficiency in either Navigator's Tools or a Herbalism Kit.
