The Angelcrest are a newer faction of raising prominence within the Sword Coast, and that is due to their sheer edge they hold. Because, the Angelcrest are, in fact, an organization of mages, whether they be a wizard, a sorcerer, a warlock, a bard, or an artificer, these arcane spellcasters band together in their shared goals of unlocking the magical secrets of the greater planarscape.
As a prelude to your adventuring career (and in preparation for it), you served as a scholar for the Angelcrest. You might have operated openly or secretly, depending on the faction and its goals, as well as how those goals mesh with your own. Becoming an adventurer doesn’t necessarily require you to relinquish membership in your faction (though you can choose to do so), and it might enhance your status in the faction.
- Skill Proficiencies: Arcana and your choice of History, Investigation, Nature, or Religion
- Tool Proficiencies: One of your choice
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: An Angelcrest emblem, a guidebook of certain runes you've learned the meaning of, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 15 gp
By gaining renown as a member of the Angelcrest, you can advance within the faction. Promotion through the ranks requires the approval of a superior officer. Advancement is a reward for services rendered to the faction, rather than an automatic consequence of increased renown.
Rank 1: Researcher
Prerequisite: Renown 3 or higher in the Angelcrest, Spellcasting or Pact Magic class feature
When you have advanced the faction’s interests and survived crash course of the real world, you graduate into a position where you can conduct experiments yourself. Only a spellcaster can craft and operate the laboratory equipment involved in Angelcrest experiments.
As a researcher, you can request equipment for use in your experiments and during adventures. You can secure the aid of 1d4 barely competent attendants to assist you. Your attendants use the commoner stat block in the Monster Manual.
Teacher (Special Role)
Prerequisite: Renown 3 or higher in the Angelcrest
There are those that, while not exclusively trained in the arcane arts, are knowledgeable of it. They aren't outright denied access to the Angelcrest, and are, instead, given positions as teachers at Angelcrest Academy, an exclusive and elusive school for young mages to hone their craft.
As a teacher, you gain your own personal office, and a collection of 2d4 students who you can ask to perform very basic magical tasks for you. A student has 1 hit point, and only knows 1 cantrip, which one that is being at the dm's discretion.
Rank 2: Supervisor
Prerequisite: Rank 1 and renown 10 or higher in the Angelcrest
Whether you’re an accomplished researcher, a committed teacher, or even a dedicated (and skilled) attendant, you are eligible for promotion to a supervisor position. As a supervisor, you oversee your former peers. Your role is primarily to translate the instructions of the Magni above you into concrete tasks that the people who report to you can accomplish.
As a supervisor, you earn a salary sufficient to maintain a modest lifestyle.
Independent Researcher (Special Role)
Prerequisite: Rank 1 and Renown 10 or higher in the Angelcrest, Spellcasting or Pact Magic class feature
Not every researcher chooses to advance through the ranks of management to become a supervisor. As an independent researcher, you can use the resources of your laboratory to conduct any kind of experiment. Assisting you in your research are 2d6 competent attendants (use the commoner stat block in the Monster Manual, and give them proficiency in the Arcana skill).
Rank 3: Magni
Prerequisite: Rank 2 and renown 25 or higher in the Angelcrest
When a position becomes open, and you have proven yourself capable, you may join the Magni, the Angelcrest board of directors, as a representative of your laboratory.
It’s up to the Magni to assemble the correct team to carry out the Headmagnus' directives. The Magni decides which laboratory should have primary responsibility for any given project, and the director of that laboratory is responsible for assigning people to the team. Within the bounds of the Headmagnus' directives, you have wide latitude in directing the activities of your laboratory. That means you can steer the researchers of your laboratory toward the creation of particular items or effects.
As a Director within the Angelcrest, you have gained access to a localized teleportation device. This device can be activated once per day, and requires 1 minute to do so, teleporting you and all creatures within 10 feet of you to one of two locations: Angelcrest Academy, or, if you are in Angelcrest Academy, the last location you activated this device from. Between adventures, you can maintain yourself at a comfortable lifestyle as a member of the Izmundi.
Rank 4: Headmagnus
Prerequisite: Rank 3 and renown 50 or higher in the Angelcrest, Spellcasting or Pact Magic class feature
The Headmagnus of the Angelcrest is considered the most powerful of their mages, and also their most benevolent. There has only ever been one Headmagnus during the Angelcrest's operation, but they serve as the be all and end all of their operations. They have final say on all projects, controls funding for experiments, and can step in on curriculum if they feel that it is not being properly informative. The Headmagnus also comes into conversation with the heads of the other factions, serving as the only diplomat that the school needs, and can defend themselves at a moment's notice.
Enemies and Allies
The Angelcrest have difficulty relating to the concerns of other factions. The closest affinity they feel for another faction is their respect for the scholarly minds of the Harpers— but from the Angelcrest viewpoint, the Harper efforts lack creativity and skill. Conversely, the Angelcrest can appreciate the skill and creativity of the Zhentarim and Emerald Enclave, but they don’t agree with the goals those passions are directed toward.
The Angelcrest have a reputation for consuming knowledge. From your perspective as a faction member, the academy has a good reason for everything it does. If you are sent to test a new weapon against a suspected Zhentarim safe house, a Order of the Gauntlet camp, or a deceptively peaceful Emerald Enclave collective, those must surely be dangerous foes of the Angelcrest. You are also bound to oppose the Harpers when they steal the secrets of your laboratory’s research, and the Lord's Alliance if they decide that your work presents a danger to a city or breaks some obscure law.
As a member of the Angelcrest, you are always ready for an arcane task at hand. If you are capable of casting a spell, you are able to use any spell scroll, regardless of it's class requirements, still deferring to a comprehension check if the scroll is a higher level than a spell you can cast.
