You've been in the trade for a while now. Maybe you were just a novice, that's been practising in the craft for years. Perhaps a businessman that's made a living selling various metallic wares to any that will buy. You may have even been brought up as an apprentice under a talented teacher. Whatever it is, you know exactly how to produce whatever equipment is best suited for the job.

A blacksmith finds comfort around a well-designed workshop, and immediately feels at ease when they see familiar equipment to the ones they own in their own workshop. They love to tinker, and are talented at inventing, and revising previous designs. A blacksmith could be perhaps a bit of a hermit, and prefer to stay away from others in a place they can wonder and think. Alternatively, they could be charming, and charismatic; a trait from previous days working as a merchant.

A DM with a blacksmith in their group should try to promote the creativity and modifications that a blacksmith could bring, whether it's a small change to a piece of armour or an entire new weapon concept, if the ideas feasible and they're willing to put the effort in, they deserve at least some reward. Alternatively, a DM could bring NPCs that will request a piece of equipment that they are willing to pay for that the Player could build and sell to them.
