In a life long ago, you were a very talented lich. You were obsessed with researching the world, understanding and breaking the rules of magic. During your research, you found some information regarding the soul that could be better even lichdom - rebirth. Theoretically, it would enable you to enter the body of a stillborn and grow up with a new body, your mind recovering your memories of your former lives over time. The spell itself would take less than a minute, but it was a risk. If failed, the target's soul would be lost forever. You decided that you would wait until enemies had made it deep within your layer, then use the spell as a last resort.
The spell itself wasn't complicated, but it didn't work how you theorized. When used, the spell allows you to regenerate inside of a baby, though you're unsure if the baby is stillborn or normal. Also the time between when the spell activates upon your death and when your memories resurface varies. The memories could begin to resurface as a baby or when you're 80 years old, though normally tied to some traumatic event. There could be hundreds of years since your former life and this one, or only moments since passing. Work with your DM to determine if this passage is due to your soul waiting for something (e.g., someone of power, a time in need, etc) or if there are lifespans your memories woke within. Your character may or may not know the reason behind this.
- Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, History
- Languages: Two of your choice
- Equipment: A bottle of black ink, a quill, a small knife, 10 pieces of parchment, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp
When trying to remember events that happened during a time of a past life, you have advantage on those History Checks. In addition, any arcane skill checks dealing with soul magic (primarily Necromancy spells) you have advantage on. It's impossible to become a lich, as your soul is unable to be contained outside of your physical body. It's also much harder to resurrect the character, as the soul may immediately move to a new body upon the death of the character - Speak with your DM on what may happen!
Suggested Characteristics
Liches are defined by their extensive studies, and their characteristics reflect this life of study. Devoted to the pursuit of knowledge, a lich values knowledge highly—sometimes just for the sake of knowledge, sometimes as a means toward other ideals.
