You have been sent out into the world with nothing but the clothes on your back, your honed skills, and a mission. Work with your DM to define this mission, does it pertain to finding a certain individual or a piece of knowledge.
You spent years training in a specific aspect so the people or individual that you work for may find use of you. There may be many of you out in the world or you may be the only disciple of your master(s). You must use the skills you have been chosen for to accomplish your mission, or you may find that somewhere along the line you no longer wish to follow the path carved for you.
- Skill Proficiencies: This background is based on the idea that you have been trained in a certain field to make the most of the skills you already had and were chosen for. Therefore the skills you should be able to choose should be varied and should reflect the core abilities of the character.
- Tool Proficiencies: The tools available to an agent should be covert and helpful for situations tied to accomplishing obvious tasks. Things like brewers tools would not be efficient or helpful and thus would only take up space.
- Languages: The agent must be able to work in many different environments and as such should be linguistically talented. At least 2 other languages other than common should be known.
- Equipment: An agent would travel light into the world and only take what they need. They are creatures of purpose and so should not be weighted down by unnecessary things.
The people you work for are unseen for the most part and have faith that you can accomplish your goals without any input. However, you are not without ways of keeping in touch with them discreetly, and they are not unwilling to help. In different places, at different times, in specific small spaces you may fin a dead drop - a small cash of either goods, money, or information. Different things, depending on what you may need at the time or what your employer may believe you are in need of.
They may simply keep your coffers filled, or they may be the type to have you report on what you are needing at what time. This will be up to the DM.
Suggested Characteristics
An agent is not tied to people but to their mission. This is not to say they cannot become attached, but they do not start off as family people. These are purposeful folk with specific goals and ideals. They may blend into regular conversation and stay in the background until a moment to strike arrives. They are always calculating their next move.
