Ever since you can remember, you've been a child of luck--whether that's good or bad, or somewhere in between..is up to you. Did your parents earn the ire of a petty Fey? Were you cursed by someone at a young age? Born under a bad sign? Perhaps gifted by some unknown force with good luck? Or do you even know how you became touched by luck? Regardless of how it came to pass, one thing is certain--you cross paths with luck more often than the average person ever does. Do you trust in luck to guide you, at the risk of harm? Do you dread the inevitable bad luck to creep up and ruin an otherwise good day? Are you paranoid? Overly confident? Or do you spit in the face of luck itself and deem yourself its controller--even if that's not the case? But more so...how do you handle your luck (real, perceived, or otherwise)? Do you find yourself content with what it brings you? Are you an optimist? Do you expect to die at the drop of a hat? For whatever reason, and however you approach it...luck has woven itself into your life.
Decide if your character believes they have good luck, bad luck, no luck, or if they believe they can control luck, or even...if they have no control over luck at all and are at its whim? What kind of child are you?

- Tool Proficiencies: These are your tool proficiencies.
- Equipment: A set of fine clothes, a disguise kit or a healer's kit or a tarot card deck or a a dice set, and a pouch containing 10 gp (you decide if it has a hole in it or not).
Every child of luck holds some form of superstition regarding luck and chance. Pick at least 1 by rolling, or come up with your own. (don't overdo it, tho!)
| d6 | Superstitions |
|---|---|
| 1 | Eating a specific food every day will protect me from evil. |
| 2 | Nothing good ever comes in odd numbers. If it's in odd numbers, it must be bad. |
| 3 | When the moon is full, I must perform a lengthy ritual or bad luck will find me. |
| 4 | I have to hide my thumbs and hold my breath when passing places where the dead are buried, or my parents will die. |
| 5 | I believe garlic will keep disease and the undead away from me. Lots of garlic. |
| 6 | If good luck happens, I have to throw a coin into a body of water to pay for it, or it will surely turn bad. |
You have a weird sense in places you are familiar with. It could be just a feeling in the pit of your stomach, or goosebumps or a general raising of your hackles or a dread sense of unease. Whatever it is, you know something is different. It is up to the DM to determine if you are familiar with a location. If you are, you gain advantage on perception and investigation rolls performed in that location. (ex: you spend all of your free time in a local back alley gambling hall. You've been shooting dice here for years, and winning more often than not, thanks to luck. But something doesn't feel quite right today. Something's...different. Is it the dice? The room? The bets? The people?)
Variant Child of Luck: Rob Tomorrow To Pay For Today
This variant must be DM approved. It would replace the Deja Vu feature.
Once per long rest, you gain a coin of fate. To use the coin of fate, you must pay a boon of bad luck. The DM must roll on the bad luck chart (below) (or choose their own unique moment of bad luck) immediately. The DM does not have to enact the result immediately, but it must take effect before the end of your next long rest. Once the DM has rolled on the bad luck chart and taken note of the result, flip a coin. If it lands heads up, you immediately get advantage on your next d20 roll. If it lands tails up, however, you immediately get disadvantage on your next d20 roll. Once the boon of bad luck has been paid, this feature recharges.
Bad Luck Chart
- If around a trap, it triggers accidentally
- If trying to be stealthy, clumsiness causes failure
- When trying to deceive someone, someone or something gives you away
- When performing a skill, bad luck causes failure (ex: swimming, get foot caught in kelp)
- You wind up at the wrong place at the wrong time (ex: get kidnapped, shot, accused of stealing etc.)
- Someone you have wronged in the past happens to find you, unawares (ex: using an outhouse, you hear a familiar voice just outside...)
Suggested Characteristics
Children of Luck are sometimes bold, sometimes overtly cautious, or can even feel helpless to the whims of chance. If it is good luck that favors them, they tend to be bold and perhaps even trusting of it. If it's bad luck that shrouds their existence, they could be cautious or even paranoid. Some more daring souls even attempt to manipulate it, to their own design--whether or not it holds true.
