Breathtaker

You have gained the ability to both perceive and draw power from a creature's Parting - the last breath it takes as life leaves its body. Once per long rest, when you slay a living creature in honorable combat according to barbarian tradition, you may choose to draw power from its Parting, gaining one of the following benefits:

• A +2 bonus to an ability score, determined by the DM based on the creature slain. This bonus lasts until the end of your next long rest.
• Alternatively, the DM may instead grant you one or more uses of one of the slain creature's unique abilities, with the same or similar restrictions on usage that the creature had in life. For instance, using Breathtaker on a Beholder might grant you 1 use of its Eye Ray ability; using it on a hellhound might grant you two uses of its Fire Breath; etc. This ability is lost at the end of your next long rest.

The following conditions must all be met for this ability to function:

• The creature must not a Construct or Undead.
• The creature must be slain by you in melee combat.
• If the creature needs to breathe, or if a creature's description specifies that it does not need to breathe but is still capable of doing so according to the DM, the creature cannot be decapitated or otherwise killed in a manner that would prevent it from being able to breathe.
• If the creature's description specifies that it is incapable of breathing, it cannot be targeted with this ability.
