Any character may craft a potion or poison of any spell of 3rd level or lower*, as long as they meet all of the following requirements:

  • Knowledge of or a recipe for that specific potion (Gathered through experimentation, story, purchase, GM discretion)
  • Alchemists' Supplies or Herbalist Kit
  • Access to the chosen spell, or a scroll for the chosen spell
  • An available spell slot
  • Proper material components (25g value for 1st level potions, 50g for 2nd, 250 for 3rd)
  • A suitable vessel to contain the potion
  • A safe and suitable space for brewing
  • An uninterrupted long rest

During a long rest, if a character meets these requirements, they may make a skill check + Spellcasting mod + PROF (if they are proficient with the tools they're using) against DC = 10 + spell level.  On a success, the potions are added to the player's inventory.  On a failure, the batch is ruined, and all spell slots and components are spent.

Players may brew as many potions during a long rest as their resources and remaining spell slots allow, but only one type of potion may be brewed during each long rest.  This includes potions at varying spell levels.  For example, a player could brew three Potions of Cure Wounds during one rest, but could not create one Potion of Cure Wounds and two Potion of Cure Wounds [L2].

*Not all spells can be brewed into potions, especially those that require real-time input from the caster (e.g. Illusory Script, Unseen Servant), those that require concentration (e.g. Flaming Sphere, Crown of Madness), those that occur as a reaction (e.g. Hellish Rebuke), and those that affect specific objects (e.g. Heat Metal).  At DM's discretion, characters may or may not be able to locate or create a recipe for a specific potion based on these criteria, or spell effects/durations may be altered for balance.
