Familial Attachment Image

Your attachment to a companion has granted you the ability to come to their aid in dire circumstances. Choose one companion. You cannot choose someone else later. If you are within five feet of the companion and they are attacked, you can use your reaction to give the attacker disadvantage on their attack roll. However, if you use this, you automatically take half of the damage of whatever your companion would have taken, whether the attacker hits or not.

Example: Character A has chosen Character B as a companion using this mechanic. They are within five feet of each other when a mage fires a Guiding Bolt (1st level) at Character B. Using their reaction, Character A gives the mage disadvantage on their attack, but automatically takes 2d6 (half of 4d6, the original damage for the spell) radiant damage even if the disadvantage causes the mage to miss Character B.
