The original name for this feat was Centaur Slaver. It developed when centaurs would kidnap humanoids, and chain them to a saddle like device the centaur wore and give them a lance. They would then charge into battle. The poor humanoid had a choice - either use the lance or risk dying. Sometimes the centaur's enemies would even aim for the 'rider', thinking he was in charge.
Now, the riders are more likely to be heavily trained loyal servants, usually with multiple levels of some fighter class and/or rogue (snack attack guaranteed!), and they use regular saddles, not chains.
In any case, a Centaur Lord has the following advantages when they have a rider on them:
1) If they move at least 15 ft that round, they can, as a bonus action, give their rider a +2 to attack and +2 to damage to their first attack that round.
2) You can force an attack targeted at your rider to target you instead. You may do this unlimited times, using your normal AC.
3) As a bonus action, you can give yourself advantage on your first attack each combat (i.e. you rolled initiative).
