If your character has a melee spell attack e.g. inflict wounds, greenflame blade etc or the eldritch or divine smite ability you may use a reaction to attack when another melee spell attack or smite is made against you including attacks using bonus action effects such as wrathful smite etc. You and the attacker must then roll weapon plus smite damage, whoevers is higher takes all of the damage rolled.
Smites requiring a bonus action to cast cannot be used as a reaction to trigger this unless already active and being concentrated on.
