Contested Counterspell - Cha Image
  • Contested Counterspells:

    • Minimum Spell Level
    • 3rd
    • Casting Time
    • 1 Reaction * - which you take when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell
    • Range
    • 60 ft
    • Components
    • S
    • School
    • Abjuration
  • As part of this ruleset, all full casters (wizards, sorc, druid, etc) would have access to counterspell. Half casters (rangers, paladins, etc) who can find a way to get access to the spell through feats can use it, but don't have it by default.

  • The “Caster” is the one casting the original spell
  • The “Counterer” is the one attempting to counter the spell
  • In order for the Counterer to cast counterspell, they must be able to see the Caster and be aware they are casting a spell
  • If the Caster can see the Counterer and is aware they are casting counterspell, they enter into a contested Roll using their spellcasting modifiers
  • If the Caster is unaware that the Counterer is countering their spell, the Counterer automatically succeeds in canceling the spell

  • Contested Roll:
    • Each side of the contested roll rolls a d20, adding their Spellcasting modifier and two times the level of the spell slot they are expending.
    • All arcane casters can add their proficiency bonus to this roll.
    • Any other modifiers that can normally apply to counterspell apply, for example the Abjuration wizard adds their proficiency bonus due to their Improved Abjuration feature after lvl 10 (this would stack on their normal addition of proficiency).

  • Resolution:
    • If the Caster Rolls greater than or equal to the Counterer, the spell continues unabated
    • If the Counterer’s total is higher than the Caster’s by 1-3, The effects of the spell are partially negated. The Counterer can choose to halve the damage of the spell, halve its duration, or give the Caster disadvantage on concentration checks made to maintain the spell.
    • If the Counterer exceeds the Caster’s total by 4-9, they can fully cancel the spell.
    • If the Counterer exceeds the Caster’s total by 10 or more, they can fully cancel the spell or can redirect half its effects as they choose, within the limits of the original spell (for example range from the original caster)
    • If the Counterer exceeds the Caster’s total by 15 or more, they can fully cancel the spell or can redirect the full effects of the spell, within the limits of the original spell (for example range from the original caster)

  • Counterspell chains:
    • If the Caster is aware that the Counterer is attempting to counter their spell, they can expend a casting of counterspell, including the spell slot and their reaction, to give themselves advantage on their roll
    • If more than one person attempts to counter a spell, up to 3 people can roll independently as Counterers against the Caster’s total, with each casting resolved independently. More than 3 people countering would result in all rolling with disadvantage due to overlapping magics.
    • If someone other than the Caster attempts to counterspell a Counterer, they roll against the Counterer’s total, and if they exceed it they cancel it entirely. There is no partial success when countering a counterspell
