Prerequisites: 4th level bard (class)
A Little Explanation: As a bard in 5th edition d&d, you have only a limited number of "known" spells, and you only learn more as you level up. In this songbook concept, we refer to your list of "known spells" as your "rehearsed repertoire". The songbook feat offers the bard an opportunity to gather additional spells into a version of the wizard’s spellbook, and spend an hour to attempt to "polish" or "rehearse" a spell from their repertoire into one of performance standards, allowing the bard to switch out spells without having to wait for the next level.
(For example, a performer may not have the "Hallelujah Chorus" memorized/rehearsed. Even if they know vaguely how it goes, it is not prepared or rehearsed to a performance standard.)
The Mechanics of It:
- When you take this feat, you gain a songbook, it starts with a # of songs = 2 + your bard level
- You continue to learn "known"/“rehearsed” spells as described in the Bard class description. The songbook does not add to the number of bard spells "known"/"rehearsed".
- With an hour spent in rehearsal, make a performance check DC equal to 10+ the rehearsed spell's level. On a success, you may switch out one spell from your songbook for one you had already rehearsed.
- A song in your songbook may be cast as a ritual as per the rules for a wizard casting from a spellbook.
- You may add additional songs to your songbook according to the following rules:
- Adding songs into your songbook is identical to the mechanics of a wizard adding to their spellbook (PHB p114)
- You may add non-bard spells in this manner, should you find the appropriate sheet music to do so, and if you are able to read the language it is written in. You must succeed on a Performance check versus a DC equal to 10 + the song’s spell level in order to transcribe the song into your songbook. Once it is in your songbook, it counts as a bard spell for you.
- Song Sheets: Common (1st level spells max, 5 pages)
- Song Pamphlet: Uncommon (3th level spells max, 20 pages)
- Poetry Book: Rare (4th level spells max, 50 pages)
- Song Book: Very Rare (6th level max, 80 pages)
- Symphony: Legendary (8th level max, 99 pages)
- Ballad of (9th Level Spell): Artifact (9 pages)
- When you gain a level in bard, you can attempt a Performance check DC equal to 10+ your proficiency bonus. If you pass by 5 or more, in addition to learning one new spell with the new level (as per the RAW bard rules), you can add one song to your songbook (not your rehearsed repertoire).
- This check can only be made once per level. This does not change the number of "known"/"rehearsed" spells available to your level. Spells added to your spellbook in this manner must be of a spell level you can cast, and be on the bard spell list.
