"Dead reckoning” is an old maritime term used to describe navigating by using known initial position, the vehicle's velocity vector (speed and direction), and how long that velocity has been maintained, to determine the vehicle's new position. This aids with navigation, map making, and making sure that the ship doesn't get lost by losing course.
You can take measurements of the ship speed and direction and the effects of environmental factors (wind, current) to estimate the ship’s location fairly accurately–at least over short distances.
Using this Feat to "Aid Another" in creating charts or maps of the sea reduces the DC by half.
