You have a number of familiarity tokens equal to you level.
During a long rest, you can expend tokens to remove the attunement requirement of some magical items. The amount of familiarity tokens required to spend on magic items varies with the rarity of the item itself and you can only spend familiarity tokens on magic items you have had for at least one level. Legendary and Artifact items cannot be made familiar in this way as the magics imbued within them take too much of a toll on its wielder.

When a magic item is made familiar to you, you may choose to rename it as you make it your own.
