Prerequisite: Bard with the College of Lore, with at least 1 level in Wizard (or at LEAST 16 Intelligence) and proficiency in Arcana.
You have a spellbook, and seek to add the arcane knowledge you find in the world to it. These spells supplement your bard spells, and use your Intelligence modifier instead of Charisma.
- If you come across a spell in written form, such as a magical spell scroll or a wizard's spellbook, you might be able to add it to your spellbook. The spell must be a level for which you have a spell slot (i.e. a 5th level spell requires a level 5 spell slot). The process of copying the spell into your spellbook takes 2 hours per level of the spell, and costs 50 gp per level. The cost represents material components you expend as you experiment with the spell to master it, as well as the fine inks you need to record it. However, as you are not as well versed in the transcription of spells as a full fledged wizard, there is a chance for failure. Any spell over 3rd level has a stacking 10% chance of being copied incorrectly (3rd= 10%, 4th= 20%, 5th= 30%, etc.). To represent this chance, roll 1d10. Each percentage represents the corresponding number on the die (10%= 1; 40%= 1,2,3, and 4; 70%= 1-7). If a failing number is rolled, you do not copy the spell successfully. You must wait at least 24 hours before attempting it again. Each time you attempt it again, you learn from your past mistakes. The time to record the spell is reduced by 20%, as is the material cost.
- No matter how many spells you record in your spellbook, you can never prepare more than you are able to with your level(s) in Wizard (6 total if you opt to use Intelligence instead of multiclassing). To prepare different spells, you must expend an inspiration dice before a long rest.
- If you have at least 1 level in Wizard, you may use the Ritual Casting ability for all your bard levels. If not, you may only choose 1st or 2nd level Rituals; however, you do not have to prepare them to cast them as rituals.
