Focusing your gaze for 1 minute on a creature that you can see within 30 ft. of you, lets you percieve its aura for up to 10 minutes, if it stays in your sight. The colors and patterns an aura is composed of and its strength can show you a creature's type, general state of physical and mental health, dominant emotion(s), and if the creature is a spellcaster or not. You can also learn, if a creature is charmed or possessed. Focusing on a Construct reveals no aura.
- If you're interacting closely with the targeted creature, you're additionally able to read how it feels towards you (friendly, neutral, cautious, etc.).
- While reading an aura, you have a -5 penalty on your passive Wisdom (Perception) score (regarding anything else than the targeted creature).
- you can use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency modifier per long rest.
Some creatures are innately able to mask their aura, fooling divination magic, as do some spells (like Nondetection or Arcanist's Magic Aura) and magic items (like Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location). If this is the case, the creature's aura can show any real or fake information that it (at the DM's discretion) wants others to see. Example: A werecreature in animal form will show the same aura as a normal wolf.
