Through years of combat you have developed an automatic reaction to danger.
When you roll for initiative you may cast one spell or activate an ability that targets only you or a weapon you are holding. The spell or ability must have a casting time of one action, bonus action or reaction. If the spell or ability would let you attack as a part of casting it, you may not do so. Spells cast this way must be of 3rd level or lower.
For example, a Barbarian may start the combat already raging, a druid already transformed into a beast or a wizard with Mage armor on.
