Eldritch Invocation: Tentacle Evolution Image
Prerequisite: Fathomless Warlock, 5th / 9th / 15th Level

This Invocation can be taken multiple times. Each time you take this Invocation, its level prerequisite increases as shown above.

The first time you take this Invocation, your Tentacle of the Deep achieves its Evolved State. Whenever you summon your Tentacle of the Deep, it has the following changes:

  • Your tentacle no longer only attacks and moves. When you summon or control your tentacle, you command it to take a full turn: Action, Bonus Action, and 30ft of Movement. Unless additional actions are granted by Adaptations, your tentacle can only use its Action to Attack.

You have adapted to your Tentacle of the Deep, so it adapts to you. This evolution provides the tentacle with a special adaptation that represents its current primary role in combat. Whenever you take this Invocation, select one Adaptation. Each Adaptation can only be selected once.

Adaptation: Offense

Any of your Invocations that apply to the Eldritch Blast Cantrip now also apply to the attacks* of your tentacle.

Upon selecting this Adaptation, choose one Eldritch Invocation that applies to the Eldritch Blast Cantrip. The benefit of that Invocation applies to the attacks* of your tentacle.

* (The Eldritch Spear Invocation doubles the summoning range and movement speed of your tentacle)

Adaptation: Defense

Your tentacle's capabilities as a guardian improve. You can use Guardian Coil if your tentacle is within 10ft of the target or the creature initiating the harm. When the tentacle interposes itself between the target and harm, it can reduce the damage the target takes by an additional amount equal to your Charisma modifier.

While your tentacle is within 5ft of a creature, the tentacle can use a Bonus Action to apply one of the following effects to the Target. The chosen effect ends if the Target and tentacle are no longer within 5ft of each other, or at the beginning of your next turn.

  • Protection.  Roll 1d4. The Target gains a bonus to their Armor Class equal to the number rolled.
  • Distraction. Whenever the Target makes an Attack Roll, Roll 1d4 and subtract the number rolled from the Attack Roll.

Adaptation: Control

When you summon your Tentacle of the Deep, you can cause two tentacles to appear instead of one, each tentacle appearing anywhere you can see within range.

  • Whenever you use a Bonus Action to summon or control your tentacle, you can command both tentacles to take their turns.
  • If you use your Reaction for one tentacle to become a Guardian Coil, the other tentacle can become a Guardian Coil before the beginning of your next turn, without expending a Reaction.
  • You can choose to only summon one tentacle. If you have two tentacles summoned already, one tentacle disappears and a new tentacle is summoned as normal, and the other tentacle remains and takes its turn as normal.

While your tentacle is within 5ft of a creature or object that is size small or larger, the tentacle can use its Bonus Action to Attach to that creature or object.

  • While attached, a tentacle cannot use its Movement, and it functions as if being worn or carried by the Attached Target.
  • At any time during its turn, (no action required) a tentacle can detach from the Attached Target.
  • Any creature can attempt to detach a tentacle from an Attached Target. To detach a tentacle, the creature must succeed on a grapple check against your spell save DC.
