As a combat engineer, you have Advantage on attack rolls against constructions when using the right tool.
Sapper Constructs are objects that can be built by sappers using either a hammer or a shovel in order to fortify a position. They each have specific features which make them usable for specific tasks. All constructs require a certain amount of units of wood to construct.
1 Unit of wood is 5 pounds.
Hammer Constructs
All wooden constructs have Immunities to Poison, Necrotic, Psychic, a resistance to Piercing damage, and a weakness to Fire damage.
Stakes is a construct consisting of four sharpened wooden poles that take up a 5ft x 5ft square. They are mainly an anti-cavalry construct, dealing 6d6 piercing damage to mounts moving through them. Damage can be evaded by stopping before the stakes on one turn, then taking another turn to move through one side to the other. Mounts may move through spikes as difficult terrain, but if doing so can only move a maximum of 10 feet in a turn. The Stakes require 2 units of wood to build, have an AC of 15, and 30 health. TAKES 3 MINUTES TO SET UP
Cheval de Frise is a large construct that consists of several projecting wooden beams fixed to a single post in an X-shaped configuration. It takes up an area of 5ft x 15ft. It is a defensive obstacle with the intent of slowing down infantry and cavalry alike. Requires 10 Units of wood. It has an AC of 12, and 80 health. Ranged attacks have disadvantage on targets behind this construct. TAKES 10 MINUTES TO SET UP
Gabion is a small barrel filled with sand that takes up a 5ft x 5ft area, but is treated as difficult terrain if chosen to be navigated through. It takes a sandbag and 1 unit of wood to construct. It adds 2 to the AC of a barricade if it is located directly behind it, this ability can stack. It has an AC of 13, and 10 Health. (Other uses include, but are not limited to: improving structural stability of walls, use as a small supporting structure, as well as quick use for blocking doors.) TAKES 5 MINUTES TO SET UP
Sand Bags is a line of sandbags that can be as short or as long a line as one would like, with a width of 5ft, and considered difficult terrain, consisting of three layers of sandbags in a long, line-like arrangement. Any small-medium creature can take complete cover behind sandbags when prone, crouching or standing provides half-cover. A square of sandbags has an AC of 18, 50 Health, and requires 3 sandbags per square. "Just go over it, lol." TAKES HALF A MINUTE PER SQUARE
Fence is a short, V-shaped, construct climbable by those with opposable thumbs. It can be as long as one would like, and takes half a unit of wood for every block constructed. It has an AC of 15, and 10 Health per square. (Other uses include, but are not limited to: Constructing animal pens, marking borders between land ownership, drawing the line between ******* around and finding out) TAKES ONE AND A HALF MINUTES TO SET UP
The Crate is a small wooden box. It has an AC of 15, 20 Health, and takes 1 Unit of wood to construct. The Crate can be moved freely when empty. (Other uses include, but are not limited to: Storing up to 60lbs of items(including gunpowder), quick movable obstacles and barricading behind doors, and throwing at those unfortunate enough to have crossed the '*******' line, and are now about to find out..) TAKES 2-6 MINUTES TO SET UP (depending on quality)
THE BARRICADE! is a wall off wood that takes up a 5ft x 10ft rectangle that completely blocks the sight of small-medium sized creatures, and blocks any ranged attacks against creatures immediately behind the wall(within 10ft). It is not conventionally climbable by small or medium creatures, It has an AC of 15 by itself which can be increased by various supporting structures, requires 5 Units of wood to construct, and a Health of 60. TAKES 8 MINUTES TO SET UP
Shovel Constructs
All shovel Constructs are Immune to Piercing damage, and Slashing damage, and a Resistance to Bludgeoning. The best way to deal with these is to not. Or have fireball/a shovel on hand. But Shovel constructs aren't really obstacles, it's the ground. CANNOT BE SET UP ON NON-DIGGABLE SURFACES (i.e. wood, stone, etc.)
Earthworks are a large, somewhat cylindrical pile of either dirt, sand, sod, or mud. It is impervious to melee damage, and can be used in conjunction with other constructs(other constructs can be set up on these earthworks, as well as half buried to ensure stability), such as the sand bags or the barricade in order to create an effective firing position. The relative ease with which one can build a large earthwork, in comparison with the foundation, and its decent size, allow it to be a versatile base for fortifications. When raised under a barricade, it raises the AC of the barricade by 4 for each square. It has an AC of 2, and 20 health per square. TAKES 1 MINUTE TO SET UP
The Foundation is the largest construct at 10ft x 15ft. These can be connected to form larger foundations. Other constructs can be set up on these foundations reliably. Foundations increase the AC of all constructs by 2. It has an AC of 18, Requires 15 Units of wood, and has 300 Health. TAKES 25 MINUTES TO SET UP
Tunnels You can dig tunnels at 1ft per minute. Dirt goes into inventory, a tunnel of 5 feet in width is difficult terrain, while a tunnel with a 10ft length is normal terrain. (Supports are included.)
Miscellaneous Constructs.
Constructs do not have to strictly abide by this list. You can make custom recipes that make new and innovative constructs. Talk to your DM about material and time costs, as well as AC's, HP's, and potential vulnerabilities and resistances. Don't be afraid to pull out your abacuses and calculators!
