You have been granted the Dark Gift of The Eternal Confidant of Vecna. To be Vecna's confidant, one must store every precious secret given with a steel trap, perhaps even going so far as to leave the trap in shambles just to keep the secrets safe. This gift grants the bearer the ability to open and close their mind, though, transitioning from one state to the other can be, maddening.
With a closed mind, you gain the effects of the Nondetection spell. This lasts until you open your mind, but will resume once your mind is closed again:
- While your mind is closed you are hidden from divination magic. You cannot be targeted by any divination magic or perceived through magical scrying sensors.
Upon receiving this Dark Gift your mind begins closed, however, you are capable of opening and closing it at will, though, not without risk:
- When you transition between opening and closing your mind, roll a d100, on a roll of 10 or lower, roll on the Short-Term Madness Table.
With an open mind you are granted many boons, which can make it tempting to switch back and forth. One such boon is access to Divination only Metamagic:
- You learn five Metamagic options of your choice from the sorcerer class. These Metamagic options can only be accessed when your mind is open, and can only be applied to Divination spells. You can use only one Metamagic option on a spell when you cast it, unless the option says otherwise. Whenever you reach a level that grants the Ability Score Improvement feature, you can replace one of these Metamagic options with another one from the sorcerer class.
- You gain a number of sorcery points equal to 4 + your WIS Modifier, to spend on Metamagic (these points are added to any sorcery points you have from another source but can be used only on Metamagic). You regain all spent sorcery points when you finish a long rest.
The second boon of an open mind is the Enhanced Detect Thoughts:
- When casting Detect Thoughts with an open mind, the spell's range is no longer self. Instead, every creature you can see, that can normally be targeted by the spell, within a 15ft radius centered on the caster, can be optionally targeted by the spell.
- The caster is able to choose who is and is not affected by the spell, so long as the possible target is within the spell's 15ft radius.
- Should an affected target step outside the spell's range, they can no longer be affected by the spell, unless they step back into the radius.
- In the event of the caster attempting to probe deeper into a creature's mind with Detect Thoughts, the affected targets will only make the saving throw once, unless they move out of and then back into the spell's range.
- Should a target who has performed a WIS saving throw, leaves and returns to the casting radius, the caster can attempt to probe deeper with Detect Thoughts every time the target returns to the radius, making them repeat the necessary WIS saving throw.
