Prerequisite: proficiency with whips
The whip is more than just a weapon; it is a tool, and you wield it as a painter wields a brush. While wielding a whip, you gain the following benefits:
- You gain a +1 to attack rolls you make with a whip.
- When you use a whip, its damage die changes from a d4 to a d6 while your target is within 5 feet, and from a d4 to a d8 when your target is between 5 feet and 10 feet from you. (This benefit has no effect if another feature has already improved the weapon’s die.)
- When you hit a Large or smaller creature with an opportunity attack with a whip, the target must succeed on a Strength saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Dexterity modifier) or be knocked prone.
- When you take the Attack action with a whip in your hand, you may forgo one of your normal attacks and instead choose one of the following special attacks.
- You entangle one Large or smaller creature you can see within range of your whip. It must succeed on a Dexterity check (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Dexterity modifier) or be Grappled. You may then use your Bonus Action to pull a creature grappled in this way to the ground, knocking it Prone. A creature grappled in this way can use its action to untangle itself, ending the grapple.
- You pull a weapon or item out of the hands of a creature you can see within range of your whip. It must make a Strength check (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Dexterity modifier). If you succeed, it drops what it was holding at its feet. Furthermore, if it failed by 5 or more and you have a free hand, you may choose to catch the item instead.
