Feat: Arcane Combatant
Prerequisite: You must have the Spellcasting or Pact Magic feature.
Overview:
The Arcane Combatant feat empowers spellcasters to channel their magical energy into unarmed strikes, blending martial prowess with arcane might. It provides both offensive and defensive tools, making it a great choice for magic users looking to hold their own in melee combat.
Feat Benefits
1. Magical Unarmed Strikes
- Your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 damage instead of the normal damage for unarmed attacks.
- These strikes count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistances and immunities.
Fluff Note:
Your strikes reflect your magical theme:
- A Pyromancer’s punches might burn with flame.
- A Necromancer might summon spectral claws.
- A Druid’s punches might manifest as thorny vines.
2. Spell-Fueled Blows
- When you hit with an unarmed strike, you can expend a spell slot to deal additional damage.
- The extra damage equals 1d6 per level of the spell slot expended.
- Choose the damage type from the following:
- Force, Fire, Cold, Lightning, Necrotic, or Radiant.
Example in Play:
- A Sorcerer punches an enemy and expends a 3rd-level spell slot, adding 3d6 fire damage to their attack.
3. Reactive Defense
- Once per short or long rest, you can cast one of the following spells without expending a spell slot:
- Absorb Elements
- Shield
Why This Matters:
These defensive options ensure you can survive melee engagements, mitigating damage or increasing your AC when enemies get too close.
Why Take This Feat?
-
Enhanced Damage:
- Turns unarmed strikes into a meaningful damage-dealing option for spellcasters.
- Offers versatility with damage types to bypass resistances or target vulnerabilities.
-
Survivability:
- Access to Shield or Absorb Elements provides crucial defense for otherwise fragile casters.
-
Thematic Utility:
- Perfect for characters who want to lean into a "martial magic" theme without fully multiclassing into a martial class.
Balance Considerations
-
Unarmed Damage Scaling:
- The 1d6 base damage is competitive but won’t overshadow dedicated melee builds.
-
Spell Slot Consumption:
- Additional damage comes at the cost of spell slots, ensuring the feat remains balanced with resource use.
-
Defensive Utility:
- Limited one free defensive spell per short rest ensures it doesn’t overshadow other defensive features.
Examples of Play
Wizard (Arcane Combatant Feat)
- A Wizard with this feat punches an approaching enemy, dealing 1d6 damage.
- They expend a 2nd-level spell slot to add 2d6 force damage to the strike.
Warlock (Arcane Combatant Feat)
- A Warlock, out of Eldritch Blast uses, punches an enemy with spectral fists for 1d6 necrotic damage.
- When the enemy attacks back, they cast Shield to block the strike.
Druid (Arcane Combatant Feat)
- A Druid punches with thorny, vine-covered fists, dealing 1d6 damage.
- After being hit by a fire attack, they use Absorb Elements to mitigate damage and add 1d6 fire damage to their next punch.
