You have spent significant time studying the creatures of the world, developing an uncanny ability to quickly identify the characteristics and behaviors of monsters. By observing a creature closely, you can determine key aspects of its nature, weaknesses, and abilities.
Benefit: As an action, you can attempt to identify a monster or beast within 30 feet of you. Make an Intelligence (Arcana or Nature) check, depending on the creature's type. The DC is typically 10 + the creature's CR (Challenge Rating), though the DM may adjust the DC based on the creature’s obscurity or complexity. On a successful check, you learn the following information about the creature:
- Creature Type: Whether the creature is a beast, fiend, undead, etc.
- Weaknesses: One vulnerability or resistance the creature possesses.
- Immunities: One condition the creature is immune to (such as frightened, poisoned, etc.).
- Legendary Actions or Abilities: If applicable, you may learn about the creature's unique traits or actions.
- Known Lore: You recall some piece of lore about the creature that could help in combat (such as common tactics or key weaknesses that can be exploited).
Once you successfully identify a monster, you gain advantage on your next attack roll, saving throw, or ability check against that creature, representing your strategic advantage based on your knowledge. You can use this feature once per short rest.
Specialization: If you are proficient in both Arcana and Nature, you can apply your proficiency bonus twice when making the check to identify the creature.
At Higher Levels: If you have a deep knowledge of certain monster types, you can choose to specialize in identifying specific creatures (e.g., undead, dragons, etc.). When identifying a monster within your area of expertise, you gain additional insights, such as specific weaknesses or an automatic success on identifying one of its legendary abilities.
