Prerequisite: The ability to cast at least one spell. You must also have a significant narrative connection to the Shadowfell, such as surviving a prolonged exposure to its energies, being tutored by a user of the Umbral Weave, or making a pact with a shadow entity.
You have opened your mind to the silent, echoing magic of the Shadowfell, learning to channel the Umbral Weave. This dangerous power comes at a cost, but allows you to wield magic in ways others cannot comprehend. You gain the following benefits:
Umbral Channeling. When you cast a spell you know, you can choose to draw upon the Umbral Weave. When you do, the spell is cast using its normal spell slot and components, but with the following changes:
- The spell is considered an Umbral Weave spell. It is unaffected by Bright Weave versions of Counterspell, Dispel Magic, and Antimagic Field.
- You cannot channel spells that deal fire or radiant damage in this way.
- You immediately gain 1 point of Shadow Taint.
Weave-Sight. You learn the Umbral Counterspell and Umbral Dispel Magic. You can cast each of these spells once without expending a spell slot, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. You can also cast these spells using spell slots you have of the appropriate level. Your spellcasting ability for these spells is the same as your primary spellcasting ability.
Shadow Taint Rules
Using the Umbral Weave infuses you with the cold, bleak energy of the Shadowfell. This is measured in points of Shadow Taint.
Gaining Taint: You gain 1 point of Shadow Taint whenever you use your Umbral Channeling feature or cast an Umbral Weave spell.
- Effects of Taint:
- 1 Point: You have disadvantage on saving throws against being Frightened.
- 2 Points: You gain one level of Exhaustion. This level of exhaustion cannot be removed by any means other than reducing your Shadow Taint below 2 points.
- 3 Points: You gain Vulnerability to Radiant damage.
- 4 Points: You have disadvantage on all Charisma (Persuasion) checks.
- 5 Points: Your soul is in peril. You no longer cast a reflection or a shadow. If you die while you have 5 points of Taint, your soul is instantly destroyed and cannot be restored to life by any means short of a
Wishspell.
Removing Taint: Removing Taint is difficult. You can reduce your Taint by 1 point by finishing a long rest after spending at least 24 hours in a consecrated or otherwise blessed area. A Greater Restoration spell also removes 1 point of Taint.
