Inheritance

Prerequisite: Background with ties to a family, mentor, noble house, guild, or religious order

Your past affords you a legacy, a token of significance passed down or granted as you step into your adventuring life. Whether a cherished heirloom, a gift of faith, or the favor of an influential patron, this item represents both value and responsibility.

Benefit

When you choose this feat, select one item or a small, logically connected set of items with a total market value of up to 500 gold pieces. This item must be approved by your DM and should be appropriate to your background, upbringing, or training.

The item is of exceptional quality and may bear a mark, inscription, or unique aesthetic tied to its origin (such as a family crest, a mentor’s rune, or a guild sigil).

Examples of Inheritance Items

  • A finely crafted +1 weapon engraved with your family motto.

  • A bag of holding gifted by your arcanist mentor.

  • A +1 suit of armor worn by your ancestor during a famous battle.

  • A Hat of Disguise bequeathed to you by a deceased bardic lover.

  • A masterwork tool kit of a particular artisan trade or thief’s tools inlaid with electrum.

  • A wand, scrollcase, or instrument of subtle arcane enchantment passed down through a magical lineage.

  • A holy symbol that functions as an Emblem for casting spells and glows faintly when you pray.

Limitations

  • The item may not be sold, traded, or easily replaced. If lost or destroyed, recovering or repairing it may require a quest or divine intervention at the DM’s discretion.

  • The item does not count against your starting wealth but may influence how much access you retain to family resources depending on your social class or chosen profession.
