Hand Of The Arcane Duelist - Mastery Of Free-Hand Magic In Combat Image
Prerequisite: Read The Enchantress's Bookshelf Tome XXV: Hand of the Arcane Duelist - Mastery of Free-Hand Magic in Combat

This battered tome appears bound in the tanned hide of a long-dead spellcaster, scarred by arcane burns and stitched with sinew. No text mars the cover — only the imprint of two slender hands burned into the surface in ash-gray. The tome radiates faint magical warmth whenever somatic gestures are performed nearby. The pages are filled with looping diagrams of hand signs, arcane flourishes, and spellweaving poses. The writing shifts between Elvish, Draconic, and Netherese, often mid-sentence, accompanied by marginalia in spell glyphs and subtle gestures etched into the margins like choreography. Reading the Tome. If a creature with a spellcasting feature spends 48 hours over a period of 6 days or fewer studying the book’s contents and at the end of that period, you gain the following benefits permanently:

  • Spells Contained Within. The following spells are inscribed in the tome with each accompanied by a detailed diagram of somatic-only casting style curiosity of the Netherese. These spells may be added to your spellbook if you are a wizard: counterspell, hold person, mage hand, magic missile, shield, shocking grasp, thunderwave
  • Free-Hand Casting. You gain the ability to cast spells that normally require material components without a focus or materials, provided the spell also has a somatic component. You are able to “shape” the spell purely with your hands and/or gestures, eliminating the need for component pouches or arcane foci. This also allows subtle casting, possibly without being noticed, or in unconventional ways (e.g., foot gestures, head movement) even if your hands are partially restricted (DM’s discretion).
  • Gesture of the Duelist. When you cast a spell that targets a creature within 5 feet of you, you may add your Intelligence modifier to the spell’s damage (minimum +1). This can be used once per turn and reflects your enhanced control over magic in close combat.

Side Effect – Phantom Twitch. The deep muscle memory embedded into your hands by this tome causes involuntary somatic gestures:

  • At the DM’s discretion, your hands may twitch and mimic spell motions while idle, potentially casting a cantrip or drawing magical attention. Though mostly harmless, this involuntary motion could reveal your magical nature or set off magical effects unintentionally. Examples:
    • Accidentally triggering mage hand or magic missle spell.
    • Drawing a random glyph of one of the other listed spells during a diplomatic meeting.
    • Attracting arcane creatures who sense residual magic.

Note from the Enchantress – Espiritu every day for a fortnight was my solution. Baneweed Tea can help but will not cure the twitch.
