Fencing Fancy

A martial path of grace, danger, and deadly precision Fencing Talent Tree: Danse du Duel

While in a sword duel (one-on-one melee), you enter Fencing Mode: You gain:

1 Action for Fente (Lunge/Attack)

1 Reaction for Parade (Parry)

1 Bonus Reaction to respond to your opponent’s turn (e.g., Riposte)

As you level up, you gain additional bonus reactions and unlock advanced maneuvers.

Level Progression

Level 1 — Foundation of the Blade

  • En Garde: Begin combat by assessing your opponent. Learn their Fencing Skill (compare Dex + Prof vs theirs).
  • Fente (Action): Make a fencing attack.
  • Parade (Reaction): Attempt to parry a melee attack (adds Dex + Prof to AC until end of turn).

Level 3 — The Counter Awakens

Riposte (Bonus Action): After a successful Parade, immediately counterattack adds Dex + Prof to AC

Level 6 — Momentum Reclaimed

Remise (Dex Save): If your Fente misses, roll a Dex saving throw (DC = opponent’s AC). On success, immediately attempt a second attack as a Bonus Action.

Level 9 — Break the Rhythm

Contre-temps: Once per combat, when attacked during your own turn, you may interrupt and strike first (use Reaction). If successful, reduce their attack roll by your Dex modifier.

Level 12 — Enchaînement

Combo Critical: If in a single round you perform the sequence: Fente → Parade → Riposte, your next Fente automatically crits.

Usable once per short rest

Level 13 — Danse Macabre

Live or die. Maybe tomorrow. When reduced to half HP or less, you enter a trance-like state:

  • All Fente attacks now deal critical hits
  • Remise on a nat 20 deals double critical damage

This lasts until the duel ends or you fall
