“Every mask holds a piece of you. Shatter too many, and you forget which one was real.”
🪞 Mask Strain (Overuse Penalty)
If you use Face of the Forgotten, Echoing Persona, or any other shapeshifting ability to change your identity more than your character level within a 48-hour period, you must immediately make a DC 19 Charisma saving throw.
-
Success: You hold your sense of self together—barely.
-
Failure: Roll on the Mask Fracture Table below to determine what part of your identity begins to unravel:
🎲 Mask Fracture Table (1d6):
| d6 | Mask Fracture Effect (Lasts 1d4 hours unless stated otherwise) |
|---|---|
| 1 | Severed Identity – You forget your own name, class, and alignment. You cannot cast spells or use class features unless you succeed on a DC 13 Intelligence (Arcana) check each time. Allies must convince you of your role. |
| 2 | Reflected Madness – You are haunted by distorted echoes of your previous Faces. You are under the Confusion spell effect (no save) and see illusory enemies around you. Cannot distinguish friend from foe unless they say your True Name. |
| 3 | Bleeding Echo – You take 4d6 psychic damage, and for the next hour, every time you cast a spell, you take 1d6 additional psychic damage. Blood pools as mirror-shards. |
| 4 | Mask Rot – One of your stored Mask Personas is permanently destroyed. Its personality, skill bonus, or RP traits are lost. If you attempt to speak in that Mask’s voice or persona, you take 2d10 psychic damage and become frightened of mirrors for 24 hours. |
| 5 | Split Self – For 1 hour, your GM takes partial control of your personality. You are possessed by one of your Personas, who may act erratically or in opposition to your goals. You have disadvantage on all Wisdom and Charisma saves during this time. |
| 6 | Echo Collapse – You lose control of all Personas. For 1 hour, you revert to a raw Mirrorborn state—no disguises, no personalities, no empathy. You have disadvantage on all social checks, cannot use Face of the Forgotten, and are stunned for the first round of every combat. |
🎭 Broken Mask Penalty
If a Mask Persona is shattered, forcibly removed, consumed, or corrupted (through magic, Fey intervention, or another character’s actions), you must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw.
-
Failure: You take 6d8 psychic damage and lose one use of Face of the Forgotten permanently until restored via Greater Restoration or a Wish spell.
-
Success: Take half damage and your ability to shift is blocked for 1 hour.
-
Regardless of the result, your reflections distort unnaturally for the next 24 hours, and Fey creatures may react to you as if you are cursed.
🕯️ Fragmented Echoes (Passive Curse)
Once you’ve suffered any Mask Fracture effect, the next time you complete a long rest, roll a d20. On a 1–3, one of the following lingering side effects manifests for the day:
-
You respond in a Persona’s voice without realizing it.
-
Mirrors do not reflect you at all.
-
Your alignment shifts 1 step toward one of your Persona’s moralities.
-
NPCs who knew you under a former Mask fail to recognize you, even if you’re in your true form.
These effects fade after 24 hours unless triggered again.
💀 Permanent Identity Loss
If a Mirrorborn suffers 3 or more Mask Fractures in a single week, they risk permanent identity erosion.
-
The next time they fail a Charisma saving throw related to Mask magic, the DM may declare the character becomes a Hollow Echo—a blank, maskless version of themselves with no memory of their past Faces.
This may be temporary (until restored) or a permanent arc, depending on story choices.
