(Derived from the Beast Master Archetype from the Ranger Class for those who want a beast companion for their character, but don't want to play a Ranger. Note: some language is verbatim from the Beast Master Archetype as written in the Player's Handbook pg.93)
You have a knack for befriending beasts, and are able to train them to fight for you. You are able to tame any beast of challenge rating 1/4 or lower and train it to fight along side you. You must successfully pass three DC13 Wisdom (Animal Handling) checks over a course of 8 hours in order to tame the beast and teach it to strike. If all three Wisdom (Animal Handling) checks are successful, you gain a beast companion subject to the rules below. If you fail any of the Wisdom checks, your sway over the beast wanes and it wanders off, ignoring your calls and commands.
If a beast companion is obtained, add your proficiency bonus to the beast’s AC, attack rolls, and damage rolls, as well as to any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. Its hit point maximum equals the hit point number in its stat block or four times your character level, whichever is higher. Like any creature, it can spend Hit Dice during a short rest to regain hit points. Hit Dice allotted for the beast are the same number and type as per your character's class.
The beast obeys your commands as best as it can. It takes its turn on your initiative. On your turn, you can verbally command the beast where to move (no action required by you). You can use your action to verbally command it to take the Attack, Dash, Disengage, or Help action. If you don't issue a command, the beast takes the Dodge action. Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action.
If you are incapacitated or absent, the beast acts on its own, focusing on protecting you and itself. The beast never requires your command to use its reaction, such as when making an opportunity attack.
If the beast dies, you can obtain a new companion by taming another beast that isn’t hostile to you and that meets the requirements.
