Your staunch opposition to being caught off-guard has lead you to modify your weapons in a way that you can quickly take back the upper foot. You may spend an hour and hide a dagger, either on your person, or in the hilt of one martial weapon you own, with a special latch to quickly draw it in special circumstances. When you make an attack, or when you take an attack of opportunity, you can use your bonus action (or as part of the opportunity attack) to draw this thinned down knife and strike quickly with it, dealing 1d4 slashing damage, but you have advantage on the attack if the creature has not seen you use this technique before.
If the weapon your Hidden Blade is in is a versatile weapon, you cannot use it two-handed until you replace this dagger on your next turn (as an object interaction, as if stowing it). If the weapon is not versatile, you have disadvantage on attacks with it until you replace it.
