You always have a trick up your sleeve, though whether or not it works is another thing. After each long rest the DM rolls a d20 in secret and records it. At any time before the next long rest concludes, you may spend your reaction to replace your roll with a secret roll. You must do so before the result of the roll is resolved, but you may do it after you see your result. Once you use the secret roll in this way, you may not use it again until you finish a long rest. If you do not use the roll and complete another long rest, the DM rerolls and records the new number.
