They say hindsight is 20/20, but for you it's second nature. This knack for always being one step ahead of the game has amazed your friends and infuriated your enemies as long as you can remember. When it looks like you've been bested, surprised, or otherwise outsmarted, you can spend a Heroic Inspiration and reframe the situation as if it was all part of the plan.
Locked door? You paid a guard to leave the key under the mat.
Immune to fire? You knew that and prepared Cone of Cold.
Zone of Truth? Good thing you got your memories modified yesterday!

Posted Dec 20, 2025'Preciate it. I've been using this as a mechanic for heist scenarios (ie Keys From the Golden Vault) and it's been a hit for my players. Easy enough to turn it into a feat!

Posted Dec 21, 2025How would this work with a 10th level Champion? Feels very imbalanced to be able to have this in every case that something goes wrong and at its core, this really stifles creativity.
In my opinion, as a DM I'd also be much more hesitant to give out inspiration, knowing that it basically serves as a get out of jail card for any challenge you try to present... I'd rather my players have to think about a challenge than just stock an HI to skip over it without thought

Posted Dec 22, 2025Great feedback - and good to consider for all of us DMs out there.
What I've found, having used this at my tables for the last year or so, is that all of my players' eyes light up when someone "gets out of jail free" as you suggested. It's a great moment of creative improv, and can create fantastic memories if it's leaned into to support heroic moments. If it's met with resistance and hesitation on the DM side, it can absolutely not be a fun feat to allow at the table. Either way to play is fine as long as everyone's having fun.
I'd say be aware of your style and of the story you're telling. If the story needs more railroad to accomplish your long-term goal (which is 100% ok in many cases), then I'd be careful about allowing this feat at your table at all. If you lean more into improv and player agency as the focus points of the narrative - then let them take it!
Your last concern about players not having to think about a challenge and just skipping over it is also legit. This feat initially took the form of an item called a "Contingency Token" at my tables and was more scarce than HI tends to be in 2024. In feat form, I'd offer that you can give your players more challenge than you might otherwise be comfortable with if you know they have some stocked HI and could use this feat to spend them. Similar to throwing harder combat challenges at groups who have access to Revivify.
Finally, my first draft of this feat had a disclaimer at the bottom that said "*Work with your DM to ensure everyone's on the same page with what will be allowed and what might be too much." I removed that bit for the final draft to keep it concise, but that spirit should still exist here. If you have a sequence that is really important to not be skipped, you can always just have an honest conversation with your player(s), or find a way to say yes but still get to the conclusion you were hoping for.
Thanks for the feedback!
