Posted Nov 18, 2025Design Notes: When deciding on an entry for this contest, I had one goal in mind—bringing more attention to Kara-Tur. I wanted this to be a message to Wizards of the Coast. My table runs all the officially published adventures set in the Forgotten Realms, with a good amount of attention to lore accuracy. Being the only Asian American at the table, I have a certain fascination with Kara-Tur and characters originating from there. The Far Traveler background and Samurai subclass from Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide was a good start. It was disheartening to see then, that WotC seems to have shied away from Kara-Tur and Zakhara come 2024. I understand the controversy that may come from working with such antiquated source material, but I believe that’s all the more reason to revisit and revamp the setting for D&D’s newest edition.
I don’t expect this additional commentary to affect the judging of this entry. I am writing here to comply with the contest’s word limit but still make my intentions clear. Journeys from the Radiant Citadel was a wonderful step in bringing in BIPOC representation to D&D, but that was only an anthology of setting-neutral oneshots. I’d love to see a full adventure going from Tier 1 to Tier 3 set in the Forgotten Realms’ own Asian-inspired settings. I’d love to run such an adventure for my table or even for my children in the future.
