This tome is bound in the scaled hide of an unknown wyrm, shimmering with both frostbite cracks and scorched edges. Its clasp appears frozen shut yet steaming tendrils seep from the cracks. A low draconic growl echoes faintly when opened near treasure hoards or ley lines. Reading the Tome. If you spend 48 hours over a period of 6 days or fewer studying the book’s contents and succeed on a DC 18 Intelligence (Arcana or History) check at the end of that period, you gain the following benefits permanently, and the book loses this magical property for 1d100 years before returning for another reader:
- Wyrmlore: Deepfire & Glacierflame. You gain knowledge of dragon's, native to the Underdark and hidden regions of Toril, those infused with elemental extremes. You gain advantage on Intelligence (Arcana or History) checks related to underground dragons, particularly red, white, shadow, or deep dragons. You can identify signs of a dragon lair (such as regional effects or environmental distortions) without needing a check.
-
Vault Recognition & Hoard Sense. You understand how subterranean dragons protect and trap their treasures. You gain advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to locate hidden hoards, arcane vaults, or dragon-forged traps. When in a dragon’s lair, you are never surprised, and you can sense the direction of the hoard if within 500 feet.
-
Resilience of Fire & Ice. You have studied the elemental duality of fire and ice wyrms. You gain resistance to either fire or cold damage (your choice upon completing the reading), and if you already possess resistance to your choice, then you instead gain temporary immunity that can last 8 hours each day and activates upon a moment of your choosing (no action require). Once per long rest, you can change this resistance as a bonus action for 1 hour, or alternatively if you are the subject of a fire shield spell you can choose to change this resistance immediately.
- Dragon Tactics & Curses. You understand how dragons fight in a general sense. You gain advantage on Dexterity saving throws made to avoid effects caused by dragons. Additionally, once per day as a ritual action, you may attempt to cure a curse that originated from a dragon's magic by suppressing it with a temporary seal of anti-magic. To create the seal, the magic circle spell is also required, though it does not have to originate from you, and then passing an Intelligence (Arcana) check (DC equal to that of the Dragon's magic). Upon success, the curse of the dragon is broken. Upon failure, the host of the curse must then pass a Constitution saving throw (DC equal to that of the Dragon's magic) or take on the full force of the dragon's breath weapon attack in the form of an arcane backlash.
Side Effect: Draconic Awareness
Upon reading the tome, all dragons whose type is detailed within the book become faintly aware of the reader’s presence. If the reader enters a dragon's territory, they may be perceived as a threat or asset depending on the dragon's disposition. You gain the following, Flaw: “I feel as though great eyes are always watching me from the dark.”
